Strange News: Zookeepers Helping Smoking Ape Kick the Monkey on Her Back
3:27PM July 13, 2012

Animal experts at Jakarta, Indonesia's Taru Jurug Zoo are hoping that moving an orangutan's enclosure will help her kick her smoking habit.

The ape had become addicted to smoking, thanks to zoo patrons throwing their discarded cigarette butts near her cage. Tori became so hooked on nicotine, she'd "ask" zoo visitors to throw her smokes by mimicking puffing with her fingers -- and she'd throw things at anybody who refused her.

The Jakarta Globe says Tori and her partner -- who, incidentally, doesn't smoke -- will be moved to an island where tourists' cigarettes can't reach her. Until then, zoo officials are trying to spritz her cigs with water in an effort to curb her habit.
